what if, your pleasure is your purpose…
What if your pleasure was your purpose?
What if you were meant to do what pleases you?
What thoughts come up for you?
If that were true, I wouldn't get anything done. My life would fall apart. That's outrageous - we can't just do what we please. It's not fair to other people. I can't just pursue pleasure, I need a plan!
I was receiving coaching recently and my coach had me tap into the feeling of innocence. I was asked to say out loud, “innocence…innocence…innocence…innocence…innocence…”
Innocence is so tender. So full of possibilities and wonder.
Innocence felt right next door to pleasure. Like they were holding hands.
And then he said, “what if your pleasure is your purpose.”
I felt such a sense of relief. Because I'm always trying to “figure out” my current purpose. Are you too? What should I be doing? What does the world tell me works? What do other people expect me to be doing? What will make me feel secure? How do I make that happen?
What if you should be doing what pleases you?
If your pleasure was your purpose, what would your day look like today?
For me, it was a deep convo with a friend, then writing this email, then I'll play music with my brother, and I'll end with a coaching session. All of these, I find very pleasing.
There are plenty of things I do that I don't find pleasurable. Some I have to do. Some I tell myself I have to do (but do I?).
I'm not asking you to believe that every moment of every day can be filled with bliss and ecstasy.
But I am encouraging you to bring more pleasure into your life. To experiment with the idea that what brings you pleasure is something you should do more of. That you can bring pleasure into even the mundane “have to's" of your day.
That it can be as simple as, your pleasure is your purpose today.
